On Snakes and Stealing

History of Saaka Land Part III

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

Over the next years the clearing process went on and on. At different times in the ministry our focus would be on other areas…leaving the land to go wild.
We’ve hired over 200 people in the last decade to clear, and guard the land…with varying levels of success.

Much has been stolen.

Entire mud huts. Doors. Mabati(metal roofing). Food. Tools. Animals. Tables and Chairs.
In the last week, oven thermometers and metal drums from the new dock.

Sticky fingers and selfish hearts have become the bane of the development.

Also disturbing the land…Snakes….Jeff and the workers killed over 30 snakes in the first week of clearing. Almost every trip to the land in those first years involved a snake story.

Which got my heart to praying. You’ll find no snake lover in me, no sir. Especially in the land where they call the snakes, “Last step,”…once you’ve been bitten you’ve taken your last step.

So we clear the land in every way we know how. We cut trees…grass…the guys have even removed entire boulders. And we pray.

Hours marching around those grounds. Asking the God who cursed the snakes, to remove them from the area. So that all those who visit, will be safe. Asking God to reign on soil that has been used for witchcraft and sacrifice to spirits.

Many times, over the last years, I have pondered these things. Through huge leaps forward and abrupt halts that were unexpected. The peninsula at Lake Saaka has continued to be a major facet of the ministry in this place.

I’ve been so thankful for my husband’s vision. So thankful for God’s provision.
So frustrated by the setbacks. So confused by the distractions.

Not willing to quit.

Praying that somehow…this land will be used by God to bring Life.

One of my only true panic attacks happened as Jeff, Allan, and I were tromping (I was less tromping and more gingerly tip-toeing) through the waist-tall grass on a walking tour around Saaka. While the boys enjoyed the view and dreamed of the camp, I was freaking out more completely with each step, sure that I would lift my foot to find a long slithery enemy attached. [shudder] I have the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.

I remember going with Jeff to make the final payment on the land. It was actually sooner than the agreement, but the guy was desperate for funds. That same day or the next day you got word from the States not to buy the land - oh, the frustrations of communication. We walked[?] the site, hacked thru the growth actually, as Jeff shared his [God's] plans, and told how the area was cursed, which provided an opportunity to demonstrate God's power over evil. He told about the former owner who raised beer bananas and who drank some of his own brew, then fell into the lake and drowned, thus the curse. But I am sad to say that when I think of Saaka I think of the bright young boy who ran up to Jeff and me as we walked around his garden, telling us that he knew everything about the land, and it seemed that he did. I was so impressed with his knowledge and sharpness. Yes, it was young Robert who later became a Christian and one of Jeff's trusted workers. It makes me so sad that Satan had such power over that bright young man, that he became the biggest thief there at Saaka. My prayer is that he will come back to the Lord.
